After the festivities were over, Trisha ensured she was warm , comfortable, and wearing half of Mike’s Tux.

So, ’tis been awhile. Work being in front of the computer 99% of the time leaves me to not want to stare at my blog. Steph demanded words, so here’s lots of words.

The extended weekend surrounding October 11th I was in New York. My sister, Trisha, finally got hitched to her boyfriend of 7 years that Saturday. I left North Carolina on Wednesday at her request (with a plane landing early and getting the very first train I wanted) and was promptly put to work putting together her favors. She was very much for, as I discovered, the method of “let’s just see how things come together”. An “oh yeah… crap” was uttered when our father mentioned that a marriage license would be a good idea at dinner Wednesday night.

Thursday included much nail polish being applied, and laughing at Trisha telling my mom she wasn’t allowed to drive home because she’d mess her nails up again (she’d done it once already before they were totally dry). The start of the morning was a little sad, especially for my aunt and cousin (who also got their nails done), as it would have been Tommy’s 24th birthday. Thankfully they cheered up a bit as the morning went on. Trisha carted me around for the rest of the day for some lunch (and Malibu Bay Breezes, which are better than your typical Bay Breeze), finishing of favors, and general hanging out with Nikomi and Susan. She ran off to get Mike so they could go to the Town Hall around 5 — they have oddly handy hours on Thursday evenings. Kelly served us Ziti with no Ricotta, crazy girl, and it ended up being the only time I saw Jefferey since he was sick on and off.

Friday Trisha let me sleep in (score! well I had just woken up when she came and she was not waiting for me) before carting me out to Kingston to buy two carts of soda and mixers.

That night I was able to step back into Smithfield Presbyterian Church for the first time since moving to Florida. While I’ve grown increasingly annoyed with certain religions, I felt right at home there. The new Reverend had the light humor that Reverend Palmer had when I was a kid, and showed he fit right in with the easy going ways of our church. He and Trisha made a great pair with the “let’s make this up as we go along”, which pissed off Mike’s sister to no end, and amused pretty much everyone else. If you happened to click on that link above, imagine a dairy farm to the left, where my father works. Rehearsal dinner highlights involved Mike throwing butter at Nikomi, Mike’s Uncle Earl making a rather… interesting speech about bushes. Trisha dragged me to Silo (the new fancy local bar) so she could chat with the bartender there – who volunteered to be the bartender for her wedding.

Saturday morning involved Trisha realizing that she forgot x, y, z at her house and had to wait until Mike was out milking the cows to run up and retrieve them. Meanwhile my mom and I went off to get our hair done – my mom went earlier to drop off something for my grandmother – and snap pictures when she couldn’t fight back or hide her face. We were there most of the morning fighting off the bees that were visiting through the open door. Oh, to have video of Nikomi running around with the flyswatter…

The wedding itself was lovely, we all avoided the vent with giant holes on the way down the far aisle (there are two – walked down one, came up the other), walked down at the proper speed, no rings were lost, dad cried, laughter was had. The Reverend said “Oh yeah, I forgot to ask…[insert parents or everyone here]” a couple times. I think he just did it to lighten the mood and help Trisha and Mike relax as opposed to being forgetful.

We all piled into the hummer limo (sigh) after lots of pictures, to head to Tymor park for the reception and even more pictures. The catering staff were super, they brought out Trisha and Mike drinks and supplied us with hors d’oeuvres while Diane set us up for many many photos. Diane was snapping away from before we left the house to the end of the reception. Can’t wait to see her photos! Kim, despite being all pissy the night before, provided one of the speeches with essentially “Trisha, Mike and Brutus [their dog] have their own special language that no one else can begin to comprehend.” Nikomi, demanding to go first, had a great speech, nearly bringing Trisha to tears.

The rest of the evening was much dancing, dancing with Uncle Earl, avoiding dancing with Uncle Earl by pawning him off on unsuspecting people, and catching up with various people. I did learn the dance for Cotton Eye Joe – not very good at it still, but maybe with practice…

All in all it was a great time, and much more occurred than what was written. Unfortunately I didn’t have any time to go to the school to see the scoreboard or visit Tommy’s grave, but I’ll do that come Christmas, and (when I remember) wear the blue wristband that my aunt gave me. Trisha put a single blue flower in her bouquet and had the stems wrapped in blue ribbon to represent him, so while he couldn’t be there, he was there in spirit.

Many photos here

It’s getting easier to tote my canvas bags wherever I go (provided I figure I’m hitting a store) even if it’s not a grocery store. On the grocery side though, I still use plastic bags for fruits and veggies – but I want to stop that and will likely place an order for some cotton net bags here near the end of the week. There’s also these cotton mesh bags but the net ones seem easier to see through for when you check out/look in your fridge for the delicious goodies inside. I’ve read plenty of reviews and blog articles about these and they confirm that they don’t add much weight, if any at all to the scale.

If you buy more than 10, they cost $3.25 each from this site, as opposed to $3.95 for up to 4 and $3.45 for 4 to 9 – I’ll check into others, but this is the place I’ve got bookmarked. So, if anyone local wants to go in on some of these bags if you need them let me know! We can save on shipping and save $0.20-$0.60 per bag.

I’m quite proud of my mom. She tried some new things — didn’t work out for her, but she tried them! She’s also a regular user of canvas bags, which totally kills my plan for her Xmas present. But, even with her new kitchen, she still is using old kitchen stuff. So when I go up there in October I can figure out what color items to make/purchase for her so she can start working towards an awesome kitchen once they get the new countertops in to go with her new fancy french doors in there and the less blue walls (they’re beige now).

Now my sister…

Sigh…

Scuse me while I give her dirty looks from NC…

She did, in fact, reserve her limo for her wedding…

A hummer…

NOW I CAN NO LONGER SAY I’VE NEVER RIDDEN IN ONE.

/cry

On another note, this weekend starts the first of the summer/fall of weddings. Jen’s getting married this weekend in Buffalo, so I get to head back to that side of NY for the first time in 8 years. I also get to see Colleen, Mary and Greg who I haven’t seen since we (well Colleen and Greg at least) graduated college.

He’ll get to fight Maya for the couch though, she’s taken to lying on the middle cushion.

Mel and I had great success in shopping today and I got Jen’s wedding present (only a week to spare!) hopefully she’ll enjoy the new additions to her kitchen. I also picked up a new game – Yamodo which looks like much fun, so locals — we’ll have to get together soon to play!

Tokyo Godfathers is also being shown on Ovation this week. So if you haven’t seen it yet… get to it!

Oh! And there’s a new thing on the comment box down there – you can enter your name in as usual, but you can also use an openID instead of your email to identify yourself. WordPress.com and Livejournal.com blogs both work as an openID, just enter the address in the box (minus the http://) and you’ll be good to go. You’ll have to log in if you aren’t already.

I spent much of the evening on Tuesday – after packing up some stuff – sewing up these cloth napkins. They turned out really well, about 11″ x 11″ after hemming. Cutting them all was the hard part! The actual pressing and sewing took about 8 minutes per napkin. I’ll probably have to do some hand sewing on the corners, but that can wait until after I see how they wash up.

So I’ve got 18 napkins for a test run on Saturday! Try not to get too terribly messy because I won’t have any paper napkins.

(Trying out Flicker posting, seems to work well!)

I’m officially all graduated. Pretend I walked for commencement yesterday in a cap and gown (I was really at Hannah’s bridal shower).

So yay Master’s degree, boo no job in the proper field yet. Hopefully that will come before the end of the year – while website coding is fun, it’s definitely not something I want to do day in and day out. There’s at least one job posting that’s coming up in the next month that I’ll apply for, and one that’s “on hold” while they figure out funding before interviewing candidates.

Saturday I get to move into my own place and get officially settled in North Carolina. My bed is in the living room waiting to be unpacked, and I’ve gotta get to packing my slowly exploding boxes and suitcases back up.

So, for those not who haven’t heard yet, I found myself a job. It’s unfortunately, not in my field, but it’s something. I’m doing some css coding for a real estate website marketing place temporarily. In other words, if I find a job in my field, I only have to give them a week of warning and they’re cool, or if they think I suck, they can ask me to leave and I’ll do so gracefully. Three days though, and the work keeps coming, even got an account set up with a reseller. I guess I’m doing something right!

Hopefully though, as much as css coding is interesting and all, and I’m getting the chance to learn php here and there, I’ll be able to land a job in my field soon. But in the meantime, money is coming in and I can finally find my perfect apartment and get settled. Mel’s guestroom has exploded under my stuff since I can’t really put it anywhere. And I’d like to get my crap out of Steph’s house… although I’m sure she’s enjoying the dvds.
